NuVal
Recently, I began working as a consultant for Price Chopper supermarkets. The company is in the middle of a HUGE push for nutrition education and advocacy among its customers. Part of the campaign (and an enormous undertaking) involves the implementation of NuVal, a nutrition scoring system.
NuVal scores food items between 1 and 100. A panel of health experts developed an algorithm that considers over 30 nutrients both good and bad. The end product is a simple number. The higher the score, the better it is for you. Which granola bar should you buy. The one with the higher number. Cookies? The higher number. It really is that easy. Use it to choose between healthy items and less than healthy items. Typically, the score is hanging below a food along with the price making it easy to find. NuVal is available in several other supermarkets across the country. Click here for locations.
The goal is to have every food item scored, and although this may take a while, I can already see the benefits.
