Vitamin D
Vitamin D isn't a food. I know that. However, it is component some foods and is a vitamin worth discussing. It seems as though there is a new study detailing the enormous health benefits of vitamin D every day. So what's the fuss?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that isn't readily available in many foods but is added to foods like dairy products. The body produces vitamin D when exposed to sun. Many of us do not get enough sun year round to make the optimal amount of the vitamin. Vitamin D is essential in calcium absorption, bone mineralization and growth and helps to prevent osteoporosis. The adequate intake for vitamin D is just 200IU for people ages 19-50 and 400IU for those aged 51-70. Many scientists and vitamin D activists believe this is far below the healthy level for the vitamin.
Vitamin D has been show to be beneficial in preventing cancer, bone loss and Alzheimer's Disease. For more information on research, check out the Vitamin D Council. I could go on and on about the importance of vitamin D in your diet. Check with your doctor and ask how much vitamin D you should be taking. You can purchase supplements at any local pharmacy. I promise this won't be the last you hear about the super vitamin D.
